Learning Lab ScreenCasts

At the risk of blowing my own trumpet I thought I'd publicise the fact that I have now a small but growing collection of screencasts hosted on ScreenCast.com in a special Learning Lab folder. I also just noticed that Screencast.com allows subscription to this collection with iTunes and RSS. The latest upload is a Blackboard tip that you'll find in @the.coalface.

The screencasts themselves are just a shockwave flash so presumably they could all be hosted on the Swansea University media server, but the use of external hosting is just so convenient.

Going Global, Going Public

Dean Shareski an Educational Technologist and advocate of the educational benefits of on-line sharing (See: Lesson #1: Share), has posted another pod- and slide cast in which he discusses some issues around being on-line, dispels some myths and considers the advantages of sharing. The presentation has a primary school perspective, but many of the pros-and-cons of educational web use which apply to primary and junior school children also apply to University students, so Dean's thoughts are no-less instructive and thought provoking for that.

The big take away for me, and the reason for this post, is that the traces you leave in the web when you start to develop an on-line presence don't vanish very quickly! Dean's suggestion in slide 8 that you should Google yourself is really instructive! This is what Google [thinks it] knows about me ... what does it know about you?

Light Years Ahead....

A month or so ago, someone in the e-learning subcommittee emailed a link to Abilene Christian University (ACU) which has made its student services accessible by iPhone and is giving iPhones to all its first years (freshmen) [video here]. Now, it appears that the Open University is also blazing a trail by getting some free educational material onto iTunes U. This is a somewhat different "use case" to the the ACU iPhone thing, but it's still light years ahead of where Swansea University is today. Thanks to Tony Hirst's OUseful.info for the "heads up" on this one. When I get a moment, I'll be having a look at MST121, T209 and T224 to see if there's anything that I can share with my students. Lesson #1 Share

I discovered this presentation through the Google Reader suggestions feature. This had noted that I read a few educational blogs and pointed me to one I wasn't reading: Ideas and Thoughts by Dean Shareski. Here I found this nice shortish presentation on Sharing that Dean has shared via SlideShare. I was aware of some of the methods of sharing described, but I also discovered quite a few new ones. Well worth sharing, I thought, so why not share it with the Learning Lab Community ... watch it during your coffee break and enjoy!
